What is SciVal?

SciVal is a tool for evaluating the effectiveness of research that enables analysis of Scopus data. Over 30 million publications from 1996 to the present are included in the Scopus database. Weekly Scopus updates are made to SciVal. Click here to access the platform

Update on subscription renewal for 2023

The University of Embu has complimentary (free) access to The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection through  Human Genome Organization (HUGO)The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection is a collection of scientific journals and publications in the fields of biomedical and life sciences. It includes research in areas such as genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, and medical technology. This collection is intended for researchers, scientists, medical professionals, and students in the field of biomedical and life sciences. It may also be used by practitioners in other fields who are interested in the latest research and developments in these areas.

International Open Access Week 2022

The Library hosted open access week at the Library Car park from 26th to 30th Sept 2022. The event promoted access and utilization of electronic information resources. The theme for the 2022 event was "Open for Climate Justice." 
Event activities were:

  • Open Access Week Competition
  • Demonstration of access to electronic resources. 
  • Exhibitions on open access electronic information
  • Use of Turnitin software to prevent plagiarism.  
  • Training on referencing, plagiarism, and remote access

Open Access Journal Publishing Workshop

Prof. George Magoha Library hosted Open Access Journal Publishing Workshop on 23rd June 2022. The workshop was organized by the University of Embu together with Kenya Library and Information Science Consortium (KLISC) and Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL). Participants were from the Universities in the Mt. Kenya region including Chuka University, Karatina University, Kirinyaga University, Meru University, Methodist University, University of Embu, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, and Tharaka University College. The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Joseph Kavulya, Dr. Gitau Njoroge, Mr. Edward Safari, Iryna Kuchma, Mr. Arnold Mwanzu, and Mr. Bernard Shiundu. Activities for the workshop were: Introduction and implementation of Open Journal Systems (OJS) software, emerging trends in Open Access Movements, policy, and Technical Frameworks. 

There was an online fourth-year training on 8th February 2022. During the Information Literacy training, the students learnt the following:

  • Access to Electronic Resources
  • Use of gateways and scholarly Search Engines
  • Use of MyLoft (My Library on My Fingertips)
  • Referencing tools

Research4Life - All you need to know!

Research4life is one of main the gateways to access information that would otherwise be in journals that are not accessible.  It allows you to access thousands of journals and books free of charge.  For maximum benefit please log in while on the University LAN. 
The Research4life portal was updated in September 2021 to make it easier for users to teach themselves.  This means that the new students or those who have missed the previous training(s) can now teach themselves. Previously trained students to note that the interphase has changed as there are some changes to the portal.

How to log in:
  • Open the mobile app/the WebApp.
  • A page will appear asking you to select your institute.
  • Click on the textbox on the screen and select your institute, i.e. University of Embu, Kenya by scrolling the list given or typing the name. Click on “Continue”.
  • A login page will appear with text boxes for email and password. 
  • Type in your registered email id and password for your MyLOFT account and click on “Sign in”.

Taylor & Francis DRM-free eBooks

Taylor and Francis have offered trial access to all DRM-free eBooks content on taylorfrancis.com (~135,000 eBooks) until the end of May. Please access the ebooks and provide feedback regarding the content, for future decision-making.
